I often have clients – especially Grooms {sorry guys!}, discount the importance of an ‘Engagement Shoot’. They either don’t understand the importance or don’t want to spend the extra money for additional time in their photographer package. If an iPhone can capture awesome photos of us what’s the big deal??  Here’s a few important points to prove that Engagement Photos have purpose.

Getting to Know your Photographer:  I encourage a bride & groom that are wary of doing an engagement shoot to instead use it as an introduction to getting to know your photographer. It’s so important to have a good personal connection with your wedding vendors and ESPECIALLY the person capturing your most intimate and raw emotions on your wedding day.

Figure Out Your Photo Quirks:  Do you know if you might have silly facial tick or some funny body movement that magically occurs when someone says ‘hold that pose’?? I do! For me, it’s a random eye squint on my left eye and I look like I’m almost winking at the camera. Most likely you have one too and this is a GREAT time to figure it out way before your wedding day. Your Photographer will appreciate the time to understand your funny quirks, but it can also help you to be aware so your wedding photos don’t capture you with your left shoulder in the air!

Professional Photos for your New Home: When was the last time you went to a professional studio (I’m cringing at the childhood memory of Olan Mills!) or had a real person actually capture a great photo of the two of you and not the ‘selfie-stick’? Take advantage of having a professional, talented person, capture you both in a natural outdoor setting. Couples often use this opportunity to capture an opposite venue location than the one you have on your wedding day – beach scene or if your’e doing a plantation wedding, aim for your engagement shoot downtown Charleston. Remember to pack more than one outfit. If you have a professional shooting you might as well take advantage and don’t forget to relax before you get started!

Announcing Your Engagement: Engagement Photos are necessary for several important milestones before your wedding: Newspaper announcements {yes most parents still insist on a Hometown Shout-Out, it’s all a pride thing for your folks, let them have it!}  Showcasing your newly Engaged to your family friends that may not have met – Wedding Website, Facebook or Instagram Pages.

Now is your time to brag, you’ve both agreed to get married and spend a wonderful life together, just don’t forget to capture the moments with your wedding photographer and HAVE FUN!!
